Decompression Sickness (DCS), also known as "the bends," is a condition caused by the rapid reduction of pressure around the body, leading to the formation of nitrogen bubbles in the bloodstream and tissues. It commonly affects scuba divers, aviators, and individuals exposed to high-pressure environments.
Rapid ascent while scuba diving or deep-sea diving
Flying at high altitudes too soon after diving
Exposure to high-pressure environments, such as submarines or space travel
Failure to follow proper decompression protocols
Joint and muscle pain
Dizziness and fatigue
Difficulty breathing
Skin rashes or itching
Nausea and vomiting
Numbness or tingling sensations
Confusion or unconsciousness in severe cases
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): The most effective treatment, where the patient is placed in a pressurized chamber and given 100% oxygen to dissolve nitrogen bubbles and improve oxygen supply.
Rehydration: Drinking fluids to help eliminate nitrogen from the body.
Rest and Monitoring: Keeping the patient in a stable condition and monitoring symptoms.
Emergency Medical Attention: In severe cases, immediate hospitalization is required.
Follow proper ascent rates when diving
Take safety stops to allow gradual decompression
Avoid flying within 24 hours after deep diving
Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol before diving
Use dive tables or dive computers to plan safe dives
