Osteomyelitis is a severe bone infection caused by bacteria or fungi. It can develop due to an infection spreading from nearby tissues or through the bloodstream. If left untreated, it can lead to bone damage, reduced mobility, and other complications.
Bacterial Infection: The most common cause is Staphylococcus aureus, which can enter the bone through wounds, surgery, or infections in other body parts.
Injury or Trauma: Bone fractures or open wounds can introduce bacteria into the bone.
Weakened Immune System: People with diabetes, cancer, or chronic illnesses are more susceptible.
Poor Blood Circulation: Conditions like peripheral artery disease or diabetes can increase the risk of infection.
Surgical Implants: Joint replacements or metal implants can sometimes become infected.
Persistent bone pain and tenderness
Swelling, redness, and warmth over the affected area
Fever and chills
Fatigue and weakness
Difficulty moving the affected limb
Open wounds or pus drainage in severe cases
Antibiotic Therapy: High-dose intravenous (IV) antibiotics are usually required for several weeks.
Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be needed to remove infected bone tissue or drain abscesses.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): HBOT enhances oxygen supply to infected bones, promotes healing, and supports antibiotic effectiveness.
Pain Management: Medications to relieve pain and inflammation.
Bone Grafting: In cases where the infection has caused bone loss, a bone graft may be required.
Maintain good hygiene and clean wounds properly.
Manage chronic conditions like diabetes to improve circulation.
Avoid smoking, as it impairs blood flow.
Follow post-surgical care guidelines to prevent infections.
Seek medical attention for persistent bone pain or unexplained fevers.
