Osteoradionecrosis

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a severe condition where bone tissue dies due to reduced blood supply following radiation therapy. It commonly affects the jawbone and occurs as a long-term side effect of radiation treatment, primarily in patients treated for head and neck cancers.

Causes:

service

High-dose radiation therapy damages blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the affected bones.

service

Dental extractions or oral surgery in previously irradiated areas.

service

Poor oral hygiene or pre-existing dental infections.

service

Trauma or injury to the jawbone.

service

Smoking and alcohol consumption, which impair healing.

Symptoms:

service

Persistent pain and swelling in the affected bone.

service

Exposed bone in the mouth that doesn’t heal.

service

Difficulty in chewing and swallowing.

service

Jaw stiffness or limited mouth opening (trismus).

service

Infection or pus discharge from the exposed bone.

Treatment:

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): Increases oxygen supply to the affected bone, promoting healing and reducing the risk of further necrosis.

Medications: Antibiotics to control infection and pain relievers for discomfort.

Debridement: Removal of dead bone tissue to prevent infection spread.

Surgical Intervention: In severe cases, reconstructive surgery or bone grafting may be required.

Good Oral Care: Professional dental cleanings and fluoride treatments to maintain oral health.

Prevention:

service

Regular dental check-ups before and after radiation therapy.

service

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene to prevent infections.

service

Avoiding dental extractions and invasive procedures in irradiated areas.

service

Quitting smoking and reducing alcohol intake.

service

Early intervention at the first sign of oral complications.
