Necrotizing Fasciitis (NF) is a severe, life-threatening bacterial infection that spreads rapidly, destroying soft tissue, including muscles, skin, and fat. It is often referred to as a "flesh-eating disease" due to its aggressive nature. Immediate medical intervention is crucial to prevent complications or fatalities.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) – The most common culprit.
Clostridium, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella – Other possible bacterial causes.
It typically enters the body through cuts, burns, surgical wounds, insect bites, or blunt trauma, leading to rapid tissue destruction.
Severe pain and swelling in the affected area.
Red or purplish skin that worsens quickly.
Fever, chills, and fatigue.
Skin ulcers, blisters, or blackened tissue.
Low blood pressure and confusion in severe cases.
Intravenous Antibiotics: High-dose antibiotics are administered to stop bacterial spread.
Surgical Debridement: Removal of infected tissue to prevent further damage.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): Increases oxygen supply to tissues, promoting healing and inhibiting bacterial growth.
Supportive Care: Fluid replacement, pain management, and, in severe cases, amputation may be necessary to save a patient’s life.
Maintain proper wound hygiene by cleaning and covering cuts or injuries.
Seek medical care for deep wounds, burns, or infections.
Strengthen the immune system with a healthy lifestyle.
Avoid swimming in lakes or pools with open wounds.
Early diagnosis and treatment of infections to prevent progression.
