Gas Gangrene

Gas gangrene, also known as clostridial myonecrosis, is a severe and life-threatening bacterial infection that causes tissue death due to the production of toxins and gas within tissues. It progresses rapidly and requires immediate medical attention.

Causes:

Deep wounds, surgical incisions, or traumatic injuries

Open fractures contaminated with dirt or debris

Symptoms:

Severe pain and swelling in the affected area

Skin discoloration (pale, grayish, or dark purple)

Blisters filled with foul-smelling fluid

Crackling sensation under the skin due to trapped gas

Tissue death and signs of septic shock in severe cases

Treatment:

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): Increases oxygen levels in tissues, inhibiting bacterial growth and toxin production.

Antibiotics: Intravenous antibiotics such as penicillin and clindamycin to fight infection.

Surgical Debridement: Removal of dead tissue to prevent the spread of infection.

Amputation: In extreme cases, affected limbs may need to be amputated to save the patient’s life.
